  7. The AT8+ and AT16+ are intelligent serial controllers for 80286, 80386, and
  8. 80486-based systems running UNIX or XENIX. They use an onboard 80186 processor
  9. with built-in DMA to manage up to sixteen RS-232 serial ports. The AT8+ and
  10. AT16+ offload the I/O overhead to their own dedicated processor, resulting in a
  11. maximum of 5 percent response time degradation (with 16 terminals). This
  12. combination of an I/O processor and main processor transforms the AT or
  13. 80386-based micro into a multi-user system running UNIX or XENIX. Up to four
  14. boards can be linked together to support up to 64 users
  15.  
  16. Data transfers to and from the main processor are by direct memory access from
  17. any location under the control of the 80186. Each port is independently
  18. configurable for speed, parity, and word length. The onboard intelligence of
  19. the controllers with separate I/O buffers for each port eliminates any
  20. possibility of data loss at high speeds
  21.  
  22. Microway's software drivers move character translation, line editing, echoing,
  23. and buffering from the main CPU to the 80186 I/O processor on the AT8+ and
  24. AT16+, making it possible to maintain single-user performance even with 16
  25. users connected.
